AQA FAQs

FAQ

Can you tell me more about digital exams from AQA?

AQA is planning to introduce digital exams. This move is in response to the changing world around us, where students are more familiar with digital formats than pen and paper. The aim is to make exams more inclusive and accessible, allow for new ways to design questions, transform how we see and report on performance, and build a more sustainable exam system.

The digital exams will be traditional exam papers just on a screen, with all the familiar features of an exam. Students will be able to return to questions with ease and enter special characters or accented letters via specially developed toolbars. Other than the introduction of a screen, not much else is changing. Teachers, examiners, and invigilators will play the same important roles, marking remains the same, and security is still key.

The first subjects to go digital will be the reading and listening parts of GCSE Italian and Polish exams, from 2026, subject to approval. The ambition is that students will sit a large-entry subject digitally by 2030. AQA has spent several years trialling and piloting digital exams and will roll them out over many years. More detailed plans about what support will be available to schools, and which subjects will include digital assessments after 2026, will be announced in 2024.
